One of my favorite songs of all time is the song Young, Gifted, and Black sung by Donny Hathway. I am an avid Donny Hathway fan (I’m an old soul lol). I think that Hathways life is a great example of what it means to be young, gifted, and black. I won’t say that he was perfect because he wasn’t but he is a shining example of what our current society must deal with. On this first day of black history month, it is important that we uplift those in our community that are in this place. As a person with many gifts, their are challenges that people who are extremely gifted go through. I often say that gifted people have to wrestle with their angels and demons. The things that make them great but also that make them not so great. While we are striving to promote excellence and greatness in our communities we must also be able to acknowledge what has brought about some of the destruction in our own communities. I see that we must call into account the need for us to embrace the gifted amongst us but also know that it is important that they are guided on how to manage all that comes with it. Giftedness comes with a responsibility that if you are not careful you will disrupt your destiny if not properly managed. Today I celebrate the young gifted and black amongst us.
